Chapter Fourteen of the Permaculture Design Manual is entitled "The Strategies of an Alternative Global Nation," and deals with how to shift an human culture devastated by profit-based economy and resource hoarding to one that is geared towards abundance for the human, the non-human, and the earth as a whole (towards people care, earth care & fair share). This list is dedicated to extending that seed of a conversation, a seed that began for many in a permaculture design course, but which needs more time for debate and reflection. ... From the standpoint of permaculture, the creation of flourishing, diverse, and edible ecosystems is essential to everything from reducing greenhouse gases to challenging corporate power to restoring a sense of well being amongst local communities. We know this. How can we best organize ourselves to carry out this work? ... How do we get from here to there? We know that "here," among other things, is a landscape of multi-valent violence to the human and non-human, resource depletion, nutrient waste, classism, racism and sexism. We know that "there" involves an enfolding of wilderness and food, of habitat for the non-human, and equal, or complimentary existence for all human populations ("there" might always be far off, might always be "there;" yet we catch glimpses of it from time to time, and these glimpses keep us going... and in heading to a possible or impossible "there" we might ask, what is the function of utopias for activists and is it better to have one or many?). ... Is it possible to have true sustainability in a capitalist economy? In an hierarchical one? What kinds of human community formations honor and prioritize healthy ecologies and why do they work? How do we foster ad-hoc, lateral community formations within a larger state formation? What are the key issues that people face, and how are they unique to their locale, their communities and their subject-hood? To the indigenous, the urban, the rural, the poor, the rich, the marginal? ... Assumptions and premises should be uprooted, challenged, debated. Here. and There. ... This list seeks to foster an ethical and intellectual community that underscores action. We believe in action. In no way should this list ever replace action; rather, it should serve as a sounding board for the ethics of our actions, and to sharpen the reach of our diverse, but hopefully complimentary visions.
